Freedom of India

By Prof. L. P. Shah

"Freedom of India"- containing a series of evocative photographs, documents and paintings depicting historically important events and incidents of India's First War of Independence of 1857 and of the Freedom Struggle under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership from 1919 to 1947, is a path-breaking work of labour and love by Professor L.P. Shah. It is the culmination of a magnificent obsession of his. There is no dearth of books on India's struggles for freedom from British rule.

However, these are mostly in the form of learned or popular texts. Therefore the volume 'Freedom of India' compiled after a long research and so painstakingly by Professor L. P Shah is a welcome addition: it provides a large series of pictorial frames in color covering the events of 1857 as a result of which India's status changed from that of a colony under the East India Company to that of the most coveted jewel of the British Empire, and of the period 1919-1947 which saw India's freedom struggle metamorphosing from the annually held conferences of Indian National Congress to a mass based relentless nonviolent fight for freedom under Mahatma Gandhi. Each frame of a photograph, a painting or a document ahs been selected with acute deliberation and a brief descriptive caption has been given under each frame.

Professor L.P. Shah's volume 'Freedom of India' recreates the glorious saga of India's fight for freedom and the values and the sacrifices associated with it.

It deserves to be kept not only in the libraries of schools, colleges and other institutions but also in homes, for inspiring all of us and particularly the younger generations.
