Agakhan Palace
Agakhan Palace is a great historical landmark of Pune (Maharashtra State). It
was donated by Prince Agakhan to Gandhi Smarak Samiti in 1972 and since then the
Parks and Gardens organization is maintaining the monumental gardens.
Historical Significance: During the Quit India Movement of 1942 Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Mahadev
Desai, Dr. Sarojini Naidu and others were kept under imprisonment by the British
Government at Agakhan Palace. During this period both, Kasturba Gandhi and
Mahadev Desai breathed their last at the palace while still under imprisonment.
The main attractions: The palace covers an area of 19 acres and has a magnificence of its own.
Pictures of the Indian Independence Movement adorn the walls of this exquisite
building.
All the articles used by Gandhi like his bed, writing desk, Kasturba’s saree and
other clothes; her chappals (slippers) are preserved properly in their places of
use. A statue of the Mahatma stands here and also prevails the Mahatma’s
prodigy. In a true Gandhian way, the memorial runs Khadi Gramudyog Bhandar,
Mahadev Chhapkhana (Printing Press), Rashtriya Mahila Sanstha, Stitching classes
etc.
When to visit:
The place is open on all working days except national holidays.
Best season: October to March.
How to get there:
Pune is at a distance of 200 km from Mumbai and is well connected by train and
air from within and beyond the state of Maharashtra. There are regular
Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses as well as private
buses to Pune. For transport within Pune auto rickshaws, buses and taxis are
easily available.
